What to Check — And Why It Matters
Most defibrillators (AEDs) are designed to be simple and reliable. They automatically run self-checks and display clear status indicators to show they’re ready to use.
However, even with these built-in systems, it’s essential to set a regular reminder to take a quick look at your unit. A few minutes each month can make a major difference in an emergency.
Here’s what you should check:
Status Indicator:
Most units have a green/red light, a screen icon, or a combination of signals.
A steady green light usually means the AED is ready to use. A red light, flashing warning, or error message signals a problem that needs immediate attention.
Always follow your device's user manual if an alert appears.Battery Expiry:
AED batteries have a limited lifespan, often lasting between two and five years depending on the model.
Check the expiry date printed on the battery itself or inside the battery compartment.
Replacing the battery before it expires ensures your AED has the power it needs to deliver a lifesaving shock if required.Electrode Pads Expiry:
The electrode pads (sometimes called pads or electrodes) also have an expiry date, usually two to three years from manufacture.
After the expiry date, the adhesive or conductive gel may not work properly, which can impact the AED’s ability to analyse the heart rhythm and deliver a shock.
Always replace pads before they expire — even if the device has never been used.
Even if your AED sits quietly, untouched for years — which is the best-case scenario — consumable parts like batteries and pads still need regular checks and timely replacement.
Your AED must be ready to perform at full capacity, the moment it’s needed.
We’ll Keep You in the Loop
If you purchased your defib through Medical Solution, you're already in safe hands.
We maintain a Defibrillator Register with your unit’s details, including:
Model and serial number
Battery expiry dates
Electrode pad expiry dates
When expiry dates are approaching, we’ll send you a friendly reminder — giving you time to organise replacements without rushing.
This service helps you stay confident that your AED remains ready to use and compliant with your OHS obligations.
We believe maintaining defibs shouldn’t be complicated — and with Medical Solution, it’s not.
Bought Elsewhere? We Can Still Help
Even if your AED came from another supplier, we’re more than happy to support you.
Simply provide us with your unit's details — the make, model, and expiry dates for batteries and pads — and we’ll add it to our Defibrillator Register, free of charge.
You’ll receive the same helpful expiry reminders and expert guidance to keep your equipment ready, regardless of where you purchased it.
Because at the end of the day, it’s about making sure lifesaving equipment is maintained properly — not about where it was bought.
